GFRG Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum

GFRG
Where an interior calls for the depth of traditional plasterwork without the weight or the on-site labor, glass fiber reinforced gypsum is the material that makes it practical. GFRG combines a gypsum (plaster) matrix with embedded glass fibers, producing castings that are far lighter than solid plaster yet detailed enough to reproduce the most intricate ornamental profiles. Meridian Precast fabricates these elements in the shop from custom molds, so even elaborate designs arrive ready to install and finish.
Where GFRG Is Used
Because it molds cleanly and holds crisp detail, GFRG is well suited to decorative interior architecture. It is a natural choice for the refined plaster detailing found in hospitality lobbies, ballrooms, and civic interiors, including features such as:
- Ceilings, domes, and coffered panels
- Columns, pilasters, and capitals
- Cornices, moldings, and trim
- Ceiling medallions and ornamental rosettes
Properties and Finishing
GFRG castings are Class A fire-rated and accept paint readily, allowing them to match any interior palette. Seams between adjacent pieces can be filled and finished so that an assembled run reads as one continuous, monolithic surface rather than a series of separate parts. The light weight also eases handling and installation, reducing the structural load a decorative element adds to a ceiling or wall.
One important distinction: glass fiber reinforced gypsum is an interior, dry-application material only and is not intended for weather-exposed exterior use. For comparable architectural detail on building exteriors, the cement-based alternative is GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete). Meridian Precast supplies, fabricates, and installs both, and can advise on which is appropriate for a given location. To discuss a project, contact our team.
